“More than $432 million was sucked from the federal treasury last
year through tax scams, program cheats and theft, loss and damage to
government property
.

Public accounts records for the last
fiscal year show taxpayers were on the hook for $152.5 million in
fraudulent claims for employment insurance benefits — up from $127.6
million the year before. Another $205.1 million was drained from
federal coffers through tax fraud or evasion, according to figures from
the Canada Revenue Agency.

It’s not known how much of that money will be recovered since cases are still before the courts.”
