50% Off! Too good to be true?

“50% DISCOUNT ON ELECTRONIC GOODS!!! BUY HERE BUY HERE!!!!”

Christmas is coming around the corners and scammers all around the world are on the loose to scam money from you so that they can pre-order some turkey and sausages for Christmas.

Becareful when its too good to be true. Buy from the shop, not the “man” who claims to be.

It is time to splurge this festive season. It is also time for discounts and crooks to take full advantage of them. In a bizarre incident in east Delhi, a shopkeeper, who opened two stores at Geeta Colony and Mayur Vihar, duped over 250 customers of at least Rs 50 lakh by offering them huge discounts on branded electronic goods.

According to police, a man hailing from southern India made his accomplices distribute hundreds of pamphlets in east Delhi claiming he was representing two major electronic brands and that these companies were offering 40-50% discounts this festive season.

“In the beginning, the accused began offering smaller electronic items at half the cost. Many customers, assured that they will get good returns, then began to make advance bookings. The shopkeeper claimed that he would deliver the costly items like laptops, LCD TVs, three-door refrigerators among others a day before Durga puja. However, on Saturday, the customers were shocked when they found that the shop had been locked and the goods kept in shop 43 of Geeta Colony main market had been removed the previous night,” said an investigating officer.

The police said they were investigating the case and that a similar case has been reported from Mayur Vihar too. “We are trying to find the owner of the shop. There was a lot of protest from customers and we have registered a case of cheating. We have collected the slips issued to customers and trying to locate the printer from whom we hope to get some leads,” said a Geeta Colony cop. The beginning of the festival season has been marked by people going on a buying spree.
