I had received an sms on mobile from shell company for lottery etc..then when i mailed at that email i got a reply asking for identity proof. i had send pass port scan and pan card scan. then i realized to check once online if this was fraud lottery scam and came to know tht it was all fraud but till then i had send the passport & PAN card scanned copy.. i wanted to know if this will cause any trouble and how can i protect my self from it as i have givn passport copy to the scammers via mail.

             I too have received a message in my mobile whose number is XXXXXXXXXXXXXX saying that my mother {XXXXXXXXX} has won US$500,000.00  [Five hundred thousand American dollars] in Shell Petroleum company's Mobile lottery draw , which was held for the development of poor people.
            I got this message in the first week of this month [January-2010] .In the beginning I believed it and sent my house address ,scan copy of identification [election card] to them. He replied that the process has started and the amount 500,000.00US$ were deposited in Abbey National Bank Of England.
             Then they said that I need to pay $750.00 [seven hundred and fifty US dollars]  as Indian Airport charges which was to be paid to the Diplomat who will come to our house and collect the amountand later he will give us our consignment. But I was not ready to believe some unknown and give my hard earned money. So I went to Google and enquired of the company and bank.I found many such complaints on the company , everyone saying that they too have got the same message.Then I decided not to give money to him.
             But I really want to know whether Shell petroleum company of England exits or not and is it conducting such a mobile lottery draw.

I got a similar e-mail from theblantons2@verizon.net.........I wish someone could hunt these cheats down. Anyway, here is Shell's clarification.
